New webcast addresses spider mite management in dry conditions

St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
August 11, 2015

Neonicotinoid seed treatments can benefit soybean crops, but there can also be undesirable “non-target” effects. One such effect: neonicotinoid-resistant spider mites can increase and become a significant threat in dry conditions.

A new Focus on Soybean webcast, titled “Impact of Neonicotinoid Insecticide Applications on Spider Mites in Soybeans” by Ada Szczepaniec, Assistant Professor and Extension Entomologist at South Dakota State University, helps practitioners in soybean-producing regions make informed neonicotinoid seed treatment decisions in the context of spider mite outbreaks and periods of drought.

In her talk, Szczepaniec:

  • Provides a backgrounder on the use of neonicotinoid insecticides and spider mite outbreaks
  • Outlines field and greenhouse experiments testing the effects of seed and foliar neonicotinoid treatments on spider mite populations
  • Shows data on the risk for high spider mite abundance when plants are exposed to drought and neonicotinoid seed treatments

By the end of her presentation, users will know the risk factors of spider mite outbreaks in soybeans and make more informed decisions with pesticide applications.

This 10-minute presentation is open access through September 30, 2015.  Viewers can also opt to see a 4-minute executive summary version of this presentation. This shorter executive summary version is permanently open access courtesy of the United Soybean Board.
