New corn rootworm webcasts help ag professionals evaluate management practices

St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
October 7, 2015

Corn rootworms can cause severe root injury to a growing corn plant and pose a significant threat to corn production throughout the United States, but particularly in the Midwestern United States.

To aid Bt corn growers, crop consultants, and extension agents in the management of corn rootworm, the Plant Management Network (PMN) has added two new educational presentations on corn rootworm management practices and technologies to the ‘Corn Rootworm in the Transgenic Era’ seminar series located in the Focus on Corn webcast resource.

The first webcast, entitled “Estimation of Efficacy Functions for Products Used to Manage Corn Rootworm Larval Injury,” provides a broad understanding of how seed treatments, soil insecticides, and Bt hybrids performed over a wide range of injury scenarios, as examined through meta-analysis research. Developed by Nicholas Tinsley, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the 20-minute webcast helps professionals understand more about corn rootworm larval management practices and their relative efficacy.

The 27-minute webcast developed by Ana María Vélez of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, entitled “RNA Interference as a Pest Management Tool for Western Corn Rootworm,” describes how RNA interference (RNAi) technologies modify gene expression in plants and how they could potentially be used to protect crops from pests. According to recent research presented in this webcast, this technology may specifically prove valuable in the fight against the western corn rootworm and could in the future serve as a reliable pest management alternative to using Bt toxins.

Both presentations will remain freely available as part of the ‘Corn Rootworm in the Transgenic Era’ seminar series and PMN’s broader Focus on Corn resources. Corn producers, consultants, extension agents, and other practitioners involved with Bt corn and the management of western corn rootworm are encouraged to utilize these growing educational resources.

The Plant Management Network is a nonprofit publisher of applied, science-based resources that help enhance the health, management, and production of agricultural and horticultural crops. Partnering with over 80 universities, nonprofits, and agribusinesses, PMN provides materials covering a wide range of crops and contemporary issues through the online PMN Education Center.
