Australia - Grain resource outlines strategies for Rhizoctonia solani

Australia
Decemer 8, 2015

Summer weed control, stubble retention, avoiding cultivation and soil testing using PreDictaB™ can help to reduce the risk of Rhizoctonia root rot affecting cereal crops in 2016.

Caused by the Rhizoctonia solani fungus that grows on crop residues and soil organic matter, this disease has been shown to cause cereal yield losses of up to 25 per cent in Western Australian trials.

The GRDC has released a new GrowNotes ‘Tips and Tactics’ resource that outlines effective management strategies for Rhizoctonia in the western region.

It provides information about how to reduce the pathogen inoculum and control the infection process to keep this disease suppressed to below yield-damaging levels.

This includes good summer weed control to reduce Rhizoctonia inoculum and use of practices that prolong soil moisture in the upper layers, including stubble retention and avoiding cultivation.

Soil testing with the DNA-based PreDictaB™ service in February or March can help to identify paddocks with high disease risk, which is useful when planning crop rotations for next year.

The GRDC Rhizoctonia GrowNotes ‘Tips and Tactics’ provides advice about the most appropriate crop sequences that can help suppress disease pressure across several years and outlines a range of seeding tactics to manage infection.
