Sugar beet seed priming provides a marked improvement in the uniformity of germination and emergence, whatever the planting date. Fewer seedlings germinate over a long and drawn out period, thus minimising the 'chicks and hens' effect of small plant next to large plant. More forward and uniform crops also considerably facilitate herbicide application decisions.

Hand harvested roots clearly show that primed beets (right) are more uniform in size and shape. Unprimed beet suffer more from size and shape variability, which can create harvesting inefficiencies.
