The National Corn Growers Association released the National Corn Yield Contest results on December 20 and Great Lakes continued its winning ways with one national and nine state champions in their 62 entries.

"Our worldwide genetic research program has created top-performing hybrids that have proven themselves in an outstanding fashion in this elite, national arena in each of the past 13 years," said Mike Stephenson, general manager of Great Lakes Hybrids. "In that time span, we've produced a higher winning percentage than companies like DuPont, Monsanto and Syngenta."

Since 1990, Great Lakes Hybrids produced 694 entries in the NCGA Corn Yield Contest, with 130 achieving the yields necessary to become state or national champions. The Great Lakes' hybrid has won more than 18.7 percent of the time. The chart below shows how the rest of the top companies in the industry stack up by winning percentage:

"Great performance in an unbiased national contest shows the strength of the breeding program we've been developing for years," said Frank Hardimon, corn product manager. "Midwestern farmers demand performance, and the Great Lakes Hybrids lineup has proven itself in an elite, national competition for the past 13 years."

"We were a whisker away from having 20 state champions, as four of our winners had already won in a previous class [each winner can only win one time], and six other farmers had 4th place finishes. We're elated with our performance," adds Tex Young, agronomic services director for Great Lakes.
