Entira preparing feasibility study to evaluate capabilities of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in tracking seed inventory
December 20, 2004

Entira is preparing a multi-client feasibility study to evaluate the capabilities of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in tracking seed inventory in a retail warehouse environment.

The study, "Radio Frequency Identification in the Seed Distribution Channel", will specifically assess the:

  • durability of the RFID hardware,
  • placement of RFID sensing hardware in the warehouse,
  • placement of the RFID tags on the seed packaging,
  • reliability of hand-held RFID scanners for warehouseman use, and,
  • the speed and accuracy of reporting to retail locations, retail management offices, and seed companies.

Additionally the study will analyze and document the key factors necessary, as well as the pitfalls to avoid, for a successful RFID implemention.

Participants from across the seed industry will learn valuable techniques to improve their businesses.

  • Seed companies will learn how to gain greater visibility of their inventory throughout the distribution channel while getting near real time sales reporting to the farmer level.
  • Distribution and retail companies will learn how to use RFID to increase inventory visibility within their warehouse systems, minimize shrink from employee errors, and streamline sales reporting to seed companies.
  • Packaging companies will learn the techniques of tag placement for maximum effectiveness so that when their customers ask for RFID in the future, they are ready to deliver.

Funding for the study will come from a consortium of participants formed specifically for this project.  Those who enroll by January 14, 2005 will have the opportunity to tailor the study to their specific interests.  The study will be completed by July, 2005.
