The purpose in this paper is to review the impact of the drought on the cropping & feed grain market sectors in 2002-03, & provide an outlook for the cropping sector in 2003-04.

Introduction

The drought that started in early 2002-03 has severely affected the farm economy in Australia, with the impact on the cropping sector being particularly significant.

Widespread rains in many of the principal cropping areas during this year’s winter cropping season have raised the prospects for a significant recovery in Australian crop production in 2003-04. However, the ‘income drought’ associated with the previous poor harvest will continue until farmers are able to market this year’s crop.

The purpose in this paper is to review the impact of the drought on the cropping and feed grain market sectors in 2002-03, and provide an outlook for the cropping sector in 2003-04.
