Independent Professional Seedsmen Association welcomes establishment of the joint venture between Syngenta and DuPont
Lincoln, Nebraska
April 12, 2006

IPSA statement regarding GreenLeaf Genetics LLC

According to Tom Burrus (photo), president of The Independent Professional Seedsmen Association (IPSA): “IPSA is very pleased with this week’s announcement of a joint venture between Syngenta and DuPont, through its subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International.  The agreement establishes GreenLeaf Genetics LLC as a 50/50 joint venture to out-license genetics and biotechnology traits to U.S. and Canadian seed companies.

“This announcement is great news for American farmers and for independent seed companies.  As everyone is aware, the seed business is extremely competitive.  This announcement of another world-class pool of genetics and traits available to independent seed companies is terrific.  Competition has made America great and will continue to in the future.  The addition of another high quality source to the portfolio of genetic suppliers and biotechnology traits enhances our ability to distribute products that bring the ultimate in performance and profitability to growers in our market area.

Typically, independent seed companies look at many sources for genetics and traits.  Most have sophisticated testing programs to sort choices from their own breeding programs along with other licensed products that fit their market area and growers’ needs.  This announcement encourages more seed companies to remain independent in the future.

On behalf of IPSA, our congratulations to all involved for putting Greenleaf Genetics L.L.C. together.  The potential synergy from this powerful joint venture is very likely to produce another strong camp of quality products from which independent companies can select.

This is a breakthrough event that means GreenLeaf Genetics will now have available a new and unique pool of corn and soybean genetics from both companies’ research efforts and will be able to assist customers in obtaining licenses for traits from either company. It will greatly enhance the depth and quality of genetics we license to customers.“

Syngenta established GreenLeaf Genetics in 2004 to license elite genetics to the seed industry.  Now, through this collaboration, customers of GreenLeaf Genetics will also have targeted access to Pioneer’s world-leading genetics library.  In addition, GreenLeaf Genetics will coordinate for Syngenta and Pioneer their licensing of insect-resistant and herbicide tolerant traits, including the Optimum “GAT” trait, Pioneer’s new proprietary glyphosate and ALS chemistry-tolerant trait for corn and soybeans.

The Independent Professional Seedsmen Association (IPSA) was formed in 1989 by a group of independent seed producers who recognized the need for an organization to represent independent seed companies world-wide.  The Association addresses research and biotechnology issues and increases the media presence of the industry in an increasingly competitive and dynamic business climate.  IPSA represents approximately 150 seed companies from more than 25 states and Canada, who produce approximately 30 percent of the corn, soybeans, small grain and forage seeds marketed annually.
