Expanded Callisto label gives Canadian growers even greater flexibility and farm management benefits
Guelph, Ontario
March 15, 2006

Corn producers will benefit from an expanded label for Callisto® as they head into the 2006 growing season. The new uses for this unique broadleaf herbicide continue to demonstrate the superior crop safety of Callisto and will provide even greater flexibility, and farm management benefits than before.

Additions to the Callisto label include:

  • Tomatoes and potatoes as rotational crops following Callisto with an 11-month interval*

  • Tank mixes of Callisto with Primextra® II Magnum as well as Callisto with Dual® II Magnum® plus AAtrex® on both seed and sweet corn*

  • Flexibility to use nitrogen solutions as a carrier for pre-emergent applications of Callisto with its tank mix partners*

  • Use of Callisto in all corn hybrids including <2500 CHU
*Each of these additions is acceptable for registration pending final label approval.

“Corn producers have already embraced Callisto for its exceptional broadleaf weed control as well as the flexibility it provides during the busy planting season,” says Kristine Savage, Eastern Canada corn and bean crop manager for Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, Inc. “With these additions to the Callisto label, producers will enjoy an even greater ability to manage their crops.”

Tara McCaughey, technical crop manager for Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, Inc. says the opportunity to plant tomatoes and potatoes in fields previously treated with Callisto is particularly good news for producers who have diverse crop rotations on their farms. “The more options producers have for crop rotations on the label the better; this new use for Callisto will give them the flexibility they need to manage their crop plans for greater performance and profitability.”

McCaughey also notes that the new tank mixes mean sweet and seed corn producers will be able to experience the convenient one-pass control that grain corn producers currently benefit from.

Registered for use in Canada in 2004, Callisto is the first of a new unique Group 28 class of chemistry – triketone herbicides. Its active ingredient, mesotrione, is derived from nature and provides corn producers with the following management benefits:
  • Excellent control of key broadleaf weeds

  • Outstanding crop safety, including seed and sweet corn

  • Flexible pre-emergent and post-emergent application timing

  • No soil type or management systems limitations

  • One-pass, season-long control when tank mixed with an annual grass partner

  • Low use rate

  • Non-volatile, liquid formulation
