Expansion of Syngenta's Quadris label provides Canadian root crop producers with disease protection on a wider range of crops
Guelph, Ontario
March 29, 2006

This season root crop producers will have access to a product for the control of Rhizoctonia diseases in all the major root crops. The expansion of the Quadris label to include root crops provides producers with a more comprehensive label to meet their production needs, including greater flexibility and superior disease protection.

“Minor uses, pending final label approval, have been received for the use of Quadris on carrots, oriental radish, horseradish, rutabaga, turnip, garden beet and radish for the control of Rhizoctonia root rot, crown rot and stem canker,” says Tara McCaughey, technical crop manager, Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, Inc. “In addition, Quadris has also received registration for use on sweet and field corn for rust control.”

For root crop producers, Quadris will continue to provide disease protection when and where it’s needed. A flexible application period – either in-furrow at seeding or as a banded application over the row soon after planting – provides growers with an extended application period, while still allowing for preventative control.

A first defense against disease, Quadris has proven to provide unbeatable, preventative control of Rhizoctonia in potatoes, sugar beets and ginseng. With the additional root crops under this minor use, Quadris will continue to extend the zone of soil protection to stop disease before it has a chance to establish, ensuring the best possible start for your crop.

Rhizoctonia rot has been identified as a priority problem in carrots, beets and radishes in Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Island. And up until now, there has been nothing available that would manage it,” says Jim Chaput, provincial minor use coordinator, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. “This new minor use addresses a key problem for producers of these crops because this is the first product available for control of this particular disease.”

The new registration for control of rust on sweet and field corn will also provide producers with an additional option for disease control. By beginning Quadris applications prior to disease establishment, the fungicide’s unique movement within the plant will provide producers with consistent wall-to-wall protection of their crop’s leaves and stem.

“The minor use label additions of these root crops and registration for sweet and field corn is a positive addition for producers this spring,” says Jonathan McDooling, Eastern Canada horticultural crop manager for Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, Inc. “It means producers now have access to a more comprehensive label to meet their crop protection requirements for a full range of crops.”
