The American Phytopathological Society (APS) Foundation
presented several monetary awards at the society’s annual
meeting that was held jointly with the Society of Nematologists
(SON), July 28–August 1, 2007 in San Diego, Calif.
The Lucy Hastings
de Gutiérrez Fund for Excellence in Teaching was presented to
Paul Vincelli, University of Kentucky, recipient of the
Excellence in Teaching Award given through APS.
Pierre J. G. M.
de Wit, Wageningen University, received Noel T. Keen Award
for Research in Molecular Plant Pathology.
Naidu Rayapati,
Washington State University, received the JANE International
Service Award, an award given to the recipient of the APS
International Service Award.
The JANE Research
Awards were given to Gerardo Rodríguez-Alvarado,
Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo-Mexico, and
Soum Sanogo, New Mexico State University.
María Mercedes
Roca, Escuela Agricola Panamericana Zamorano, Honduras,
received of the International Travel Award. This fund,
established with the Office of International Programs, supports
travel costs for early- to mid-career international APS members
to participate in an APS annual meeting.
The Frank L.
Howard Undergraduate Fellowship, a fund supporting undergraduate
research projects in plant pathology, was awarded to
Christopher D. Aakre, Stanford University, and Michael
Meyer, University of Illinois.
The French-Monar
Latin American Travel Awards were given to Luis A. Alvarez
Bernaola, Universidad Politécnica de Valencia; Byron Vega
J., University of Puerto Rico; Raúl Allende Molar,
CIAD AC; Jeannette Alicia Williams, Ministry of
Agriculture and Lands Research and Development Division-Jamaica;
and Gastón Apablaza-Hidalgo, Pontificia Universidad
Católica de Chile.
The 7th I.E.
Melhus Graduate Student Symposium Award, to support a student
speaker or student symposium at the APS Annual Meeting, was
presented to Xiojun Hu, University of Idaho, Li-Fang
Chen, University of California-Davis, Subhas Hajeri,
University of California-Riverside, Lucy Stewart,
University of California-Davis, Vihanga Pahalawatta,
Washington State University, Priya Raja, Ohio State
University.
In addition,
travel assistance awards were presented to 31 students. These
awards are designed to help students studying in the field of
plant pathology present their work, either in an oral or poster
presentation, at the APS annual meeting.
