Distinguished vegetable breeder Dr. Fred Angell retires
Hollister, California
February 2, 2007

Dr. Fred Angell retired January 31 from United Genetics Seeds Company, after a long and productive career in the vegetable seed industry.

Fred grew up on a vegetable and fruit farm in southern Illinois, where he acquired his interest in plants. After earning a B.S.and M.S. degree from Southern Illinois University, he went to the University of Wisconsin in 1961 to enter the PhD program in the Plant Pathology and Horticulture Departments, under the direction of Drs. Pound, Williams, and Gabelman. It was during his time at the University of Wisconsin that he met his wife Bonnie.

After graduating with a PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1965, Fred took a position in the Horticulture Department at the University of Maryland. His interest in private industry led to a position as Research Director at the A.L.Castle Seed Company in Morgan Hill, California, in 1974. He moved to Asgrow Seed Company in 1985, to head the processing tomato program. For the last 6 years he has been with United Genetics Seeds in Hollister, California.

At Asgrow Seed Company, Fred was the leader of a team that developed the "Brigade" and "APT 410" varieties, which were among the leading varieties in the processing industry during the 1990s. Both of these varieties are still being grown today.

Fred mentions "the contacts and associations I had with colleagues, growers, shippers, processors and other industry and university people" as the things he will miss most. "I especially enjoyed the international aspects of the business during my years at Asgrow and United Genetics".

Fred and Bonnie will now have more time to spend with their family, which includes six grandchildren.
