Horizon Ag announced
today that it is committed to testing and evaluation so that
only quality CLEARFIELD® rice seed makes it into the market for
the upcoming 2007 planting season.
In late January, the Arkansas
State Plant Board announced “a limited amount of detection” of a
LibertyLink®
trait in a limited number of lots of CL131 rice seed. The Plant
Board stated that the early detections were not conclusive and
that it was not known if these detections were of either LL601
or LL62. Further testing of this and other CLEARFIELD® varieties
is underway and results will be announced when appropriate.
“Horizon Ag is actively conducting
tests on all of CLEARFIELD rice varieties in current production,
and we are focusing this testing on parent seed stocks that are
used to produce certified seed for the U.S. rice producer,” said
Randy Ouzts, general manager of Horizon Ag, LLC, the company
that markets CL131.
The samples being tested by
Horizon are from all CLEARFIELD seed sources used to produce
commercial
varieties available in the channel of trade, Ouzts said. Testing
the various classes of parent seed takes time and is a very
complicated endeavor. Results from testing are expected in the
very near future.
“We understand the importance of
this issue for our rice producer customers and our ORYGEN® Seed
Producer-Processors and we are committed to ensuring that all
seed stocks received by our Producer-Processors meet all
federal and state standards,” Ouzts said.
Horizon Ag developed its ORYGEN
Seed Marketing System to coordinate the production and
distribution of
advanced seed lines for technology providers and public
university breeding systems through quality rice seed producers,
processors and seed retailers.
