BASF Canada receives minor use registration for Solo herbicide on Clearfield sunflowers - Registration paves way for introduction of new herbicide-tolerant production system in 2008

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
January 3, 2008

BASF Canada has received a minor use registration for SOLO® herbicide on CLEARFIELD® sunflowers. The registration, which was supported by Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) and the National Sunflower Association, paves the way for the introduction of the CLEARFIELD Production System for Sunflowers in 2008.

"Together, SOLO herbicide and CLEARFIELD sunflowers will offer growers a quantum leap in weed control in this crop by providing in-season control of all major grasses and broadleaf weeds, including Group 1 resistant grasses," says Scott Chapman, CLEARFIELD Brand Manager for BASF Canada.

"With the introduction of the CLEARFIELD Production System for Sunflowers, we’re giving growers the opportunity to focus on the production of a high-yielding, high-quality crop without the worry of rotational challenges. SOLO provides superior weed control and follow-crop flexibility over other weed control options in sunflowers, offering freedom to seed most other crops in the years subsequent to application," Chapman adds. SOLO controls 8 broadleaf weeds and 10 grasses and provides suppression of a number of other weeds as well.

As part of the introduction of the CLEARFIELD Production System for Sunflowers in 2008, four CLEARFIELD sunflower varieties will be commercially available. They are:

Jaguar – an early maturing confection variety from Seeds® 2000
Viper – a medium maturing oilseed variety from Seeds 2000
8N386 CL – a medium-late maturing NuSun variety from Mycogen®
8N358 CL – a medium-early maturing NuSun variety from Mycogen

"One of the major challenges in growing sunflowers is broadleaf weed control," says Arvel Lawson, Oilseed Specialist with MAFRI. "Now, with the availability of new CLEARFIELD sunflower varieties and broader spectrum in-crop weed control from SOLO, growers have another option to consider when it comes to sunflower production."

Growers who grow CLEARFIELD sunflowers starting in 2008 will be required to sign a CLEARFIELD Commitment and remit a CLEARFIELD Commitment Fee equivalent to $3 per acre at the time of seed purchase. The Commitment also ensures growers are eligible for a number of benefits through the CLEARFIELD AdvantageTM. The CLEARFIELD Seed Protection Advantage provides a savings of $1 per acre on GEMINI® and CHARTER® seed treatments on all cereal acres, and the CLEARFIELD Value Advantage offers 10% savings on SOLO herbicide. Through the GrowForwardTM Rewards program, growers can also save up to an additional 14% on BASF herbicides, including SOLO as well as 22% on BASF fungicides.

Growers are encouraged to speak with their sunflower seed retailer for additional information or visit www.agsolutions.ca.
