Australian canola, sunflower and soybean crop report

Canola 2008/09

The canola crop is forecast to be around 1.6 million tonnes.

Rain over the Anzac weekend across NSW and good prices has seen grower support for canola this season, although the dry May has seen some potential canola area switch to cereals. There have been reasonable, but variable, falls of rain across the state in the last week. This has boosted crops and enabled access to sub soil moisture. Areas which received good summer rainfall, have good sub soil moisture. Germination is variable, largely related to summer weed control. Crops range from just emerging to 6 leaf stage. There have been a few
reports of insects, but these tend to be localised. Prospects are looking better than last year.

The average break in May across Victoria has been followed by a very dry period which has been broken by good rainfall in the last week. The rain over the last week has boosted the crops and establishment has been very good in most crops. There are some insects around, but nothing unusual. In the Mallee crops have been impacted by the dry conditions, while crops in the Wimmera generally look good, around two leaf stage. The north east/north central region was largely dry sown and emerged on the mid May rain. Crops generally look
very good. Some parts of the Western District area had good rain mid May, followed by further falls last weekend. Crops are at the 1‐2 leaf stage. The mild temperatures have helped crops and prospects generally look good if there is a reasonable winter rain pattern.

In South Australia, rainfall patterns have been similar to Victoria i.e. a dry period following planting and then
reasonable rain over the past week. Most areas in the State have had enough rain to keep crops going and generally prospects look good.

Following the excellent start to the season across Western Australia, conditions have been remained dry. Canola
plantings are forecast to be higher this year at the expense of lupin and pasture plantings, given the favourable price outlook and good start to the season. Generally there has been good crop emergence/ establishment and crops are looking good, given the early moisture levels.

Sunflowers 2007/08

Estimates remain unchanged from last month for sunflowers.

Soybeans 2007/08

The soybean harvest is virtually complete and estimates remain unchanged from last month.

In the Riverina, single cropped soybeans yielded in excess of 4.15t/ha and doubled cropped soybean yielded approximately 3.5t/ha. These were double cropped behind winter wheat and canola crops. Quality to date is believed to be good.
