Ukraine amends it’s biosafety legislation

On 19 March 2009 the Draft Law on Amending Certain Laws of Ukraine regarding the adoption of the Law of Ukraine on State System of BioSafety in Creation, Testing, Transporting and Use of Generically-Modified Organisms No 2436 dated 24 April 2008 was adopted by the Parliament.

The Draft Law defines the competence of the special state authorised body on environment protection issues, use of mineral resources and issues of biological and genetical safety. Moreover, it envisages the actions regarding environment protection under biotechnology products use and sets the responsibilities for the violations of the environment protection requirements under the genetically modified organisms use.

Besides that, the adopted Draft Law envisages including genetically modified organisms to the list subject to the ecological expertise and stipulates that the genetically-engineering activity carried out in containment is subject to licensing.

The Act will enter into force after signing by the President of Ukraine and it's publication in press.
