Hoechst Schering AgrEvo GmbH (AgrEvo), Berlin,
announced today the launch of AgrEvo Seeds Australia Pty. Ltd. (ASA). ASA
is a fully owned subsidiary of AgrEvo and will serve as a platform for the company's
growing seed activities in Australia. AgrEvo has been developing hybrid oilseedrape
in Australia for several years and is now expanding into other field crops, including corn
and sorghum. As part of that expansion, ASA has acquired the sorghum
breeding program of GeneX, an Australian seed company based in Toowoomba,
Queensland. The acquisition price of GeneX has not been disclosed.
Today GeneX has a market share of approximately 12% in grain sorghum and 20% in forage
sorghum. GeneX also selects, produces and commercialises corn hybrids for the Australian
market sourced from Proagro Seed Company Ltd. This is a wholly owned subsidiary of AgrEvo
and is a leading hybrid seeds company for corn, maize, sorghum and other crops in India.
ASA will be headquartered in Toowoomba and have breeding and research facilities both
there and in Horsham/Victoria. The summer crops research, including sorghum, corn and
eventually sunflower, will be based in Toowoomba, while oilseedrape
research will be located at Horsham.
Dr. Max Cowie, former Managing Director and owner of GeneX has been appointed general
manager of ASA. Dr. Cowie completed his PhD in plant breeding at the University of
Queensland. He was active in the Australian seeds industry for more than 15 years prior to
establishing GeneX in 1990.
"The launch of AgrEvo Seeds Australia is another important step in our global seed
business expansion," commented Dr. Gerhard Prante, CEO of AgrEvo. Besides wheat and
cotton, the major Australian field crops are oilseedrape, sorghum, corn and sunflower. Dr.
Prante added that

protection business, we are now also active in Australia in the research and development
of oilseed rape, corn and

AgrEvo will offer farmers input packages designed to optimise the economic and ecological
production of their crops."
Last year AgrEvo also published the launch of AgrEvo Cotton Seed International,
a joint venture with Cotton Seed International of Australia. Additionally
in 1998 AgrEvo formed a research alliance with Australia's Commonwealth
Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in the area of cotton biotechnology.

enhancing crop production, together with applications for urban pest control. AgrEvo

Hoechst Schering AgrEvo GmbH (AgrEvo), Berlin, gab
heute die Gründung der Firma AgrEvo Seeds Australia Pty. Ltd. (ASA) bekannt. Als 100%ige
AgrEvo-Tochter wird ASA Plattform für die wachsenden Saatgutgeschäfte des Unternehmens
in Australien. AgrEvo entwickelt bereits seit mehreren Jahren Rapshybride in Australien
und will die Aktivitäten auf weitere Kulturpflanzen wie Mais und Sorghum ausdehnen. Im
Rahmen dieser Expansion hat ASA von GeneX, einer australischen Saatgutfirma mit Sitz in
Toowoomba/Queensland, das Zuchtprogramm für Sorghum übernommen. Über den
Übernahmepreis wurden keine Angaben gemacht.
GeneX hat in Australien einen Marktanteil von etwa 12% an Körner-Sorghum sowie 20% an
Futter-Sorghum. Ein weiteres Geschäftsgebiet von GeneX ist die Selektion, Produktion und
Vermarktung von Maishybriden der Proagro Seed Company Ltd. für den australischen Markt.
Proagro, ebenfalls eine 100%ige Tochtergesellschaft der AgrEvo, ist eine führende
Hybridsaatgutfirma für Mais, Reis, Sorghum und andere Kulturen in Indien.
ASA wird über Forschungs- und Züchtungseinrichtungen sowohl in Toowoomba, dem künftigen
Hauptsitz der Firma, als auch in Horsham/Victoria verfügen. Sorghum und Mais werden in
Toowoomba bearbeitet und Raps in Horsham.
Dr. Max Cowie, bisheriger Geschäftsführer und Eigentümer von GeneX, wird die Leitung
von ASA übernehmen. Nach seiner Promotion an der Universität Queensland auf dem Gebiet
der Pflanzenzüchtung arbeitete Dr. Cowie mehr als 15 Jahre in der australischen
Pflanzenzüchtung bevor er 1990 GeneX gründete.
"Die Gründung von AgrEvo Seeds Australia ist ein weiterer wichtiger Schritt für die
weltweite Etablierung unserer Pflanzenzüchtung in den wesentlichen Agrarmärkten,"
sagte Dr. Gerhard Prante, Vorsitzender der Geschäftsführung von AgrEvo. Neben Weizen und
Baumwolle sind Raps, Sorghum, Mais und Sonnenblumen die wichtigsten Feldkulturen
Australiens. Dr. Prante weiter: "Australien ist eines der großen Agrarländer. Hier
wollen wir künftig zu den führenden Anbietern von hochwertigem Saatgut zählen. Zu
unserer fest etablierten Marktpräsenz im Pflanzenschutz kommen jetzt Forschungs- und
Entwicklungsaktivitäten mit Raps?, Mais- und Sorghumsaatgut in Australien. Damit ist
AgrEvo in der Lage, künftig dem Landwirt ein komplettes Angebot für die ökonomische und
ökologische Optimierung seiner Kulturen zumachen."
Im vorigen Jahr hatte AgrEvo bereits AgrEvo Cotton Seed International gegründet, ein
Joint Venture mit der australischen Firma Cotton Seed International. 1998 war AgrEvo
außerdem eine Forschungsallianz mit der Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research
Organisation (CSIRO) auf dem Gebiet der Baumwollbiotechnologie eingegangen.
AgrEvo ist ein international führendes Unternehmen in der Pflanzenbiotechnologie, der
