Garst growers earn numerous honors in 1999 Iowa Masters Yield competition

Iowa corn growers planting Garst Seed Company corn and soybean products earned several top awards at this year's Iowa Crop Improvement Association awards banquet held recently in Ames,
Iowa. Four Garst customers received 1st place awards at the District level, with another placing 2nd in their District competition. Additionally, Garst customers recorded an impressive 17 local winning entries across the state. The Iowa Master Corn and Soybean Growers' Contests are coordinated by Iowa Crop Improvement Association (ICIA) and conducted by local sponsors. The
purpose of the contests is to promote the use of good seed, encourage the development of new techniques and to promote the use of good cultural techniques in crop production for the betterment of Iowa Agriculture.  

The Iowa Master Corn Contest has been held every year since 1938, making it one of the longest running and highly respected yield competitions in the United States. Any Iowa corn or soybean grower is eligible to enter the contests.  

Garst Corn District Winners

In District 5 competition, David Marty from LuVerne, Iowa recorded a first-place entry with his Garst 8600IT hybrid and a yield of 226.04 bu/acre. Marty's entry also was recognized as a local competition winner. The Humboldt Lion's Club sponsored Marty's first-place winning entry.

Claiming a 1st place and local winner in District 9 was Bill Danner and his sister Peggy representing Danner Farms Inc. of West Liberty, Iowa. Garst 8464 yielded 225.69 bu/acre for Danner Farms' entry into the local competition and was sponsored by the West Liberty FFA & Lions Club. 

In District 12 awards, NPKK Pork LLC won the 1st place recognition with their Garst 8342 and a yield of 215.12 bu/acre. The Washington Crop Booster Club sponsored Paul and Kevin Reed's entry into the District 12 competition. NPKK Pork also was recognized as a Residue Management winner and a local competition winner.

Claiming the 2nd place award in District 11 is Rusty Faubion for Faubion Farms from Brockton, Iowa. Sponsored by the Mount Ayre Chamber of Commerce, Faubion's entry of 215.13 bu/acre was achieved with Garst 8464.

In District 6, Charles McCullough of Bernard, Iowa received the Residue Management award as well are winning the local competition with his Garst 8550 hybrid and a yield of 211.87 bu/acre. The Dubuque County Tillage Club sponsored McCullough's local entry and competition.

Additionally, Garst customers recorded an impressive 47 local runner-up and third place finishes across the state.

Garst Soybean Winners

Garst Seed Company soybean growers posted several local competition winning entries.

Brand Farms from Somers, Iowa won their local competition with Garst D269 soybeans. Brand's local entry yielded 54.14 bu/acre was sponsored by the Central Trail FFA Chapter. 

Tom Vander Heiden from Weatland, Iowa placed first with Garst D260 soybeans and a yield of 74.24 bu/acre. Kay Farms Elevator sponsored Vander Heiden's entry.

Jerry Hammen from Fonda, Iowa recorded a first-place effort with his yield of 55.30 bu/acre from his Garst D267N soybeans and his entry was sponsored by the Pilot Creek FFA Chapter.

In local competitions, 29 runner-up and third place entries across the state were also achieved with Garst soybeans.

1999 Entries

There were 137 corn contests and 126 soybean contests sponsored locally around Iowa in 1999. A total of 2,343 entries were received in the corn contest with 1,524 submitting qualified harvests. In the soybean contest there were 1,625 entries with 1,016 qualified harvests.
