Seed multiplication

Smith Seeds Ltd.

Smith Seeds Ltd was established in 1990 and was the first New Zealand based specialist supplier of quality vegetable seeds to Asia. The company is located in Ashburton, the central area of the Canterbury Plains, renowned worldwide for top quality seed production.

This area has fertile well irrigated soils and highly mechanised farms. With a temperate climate coupled with low humidity it is not surprising that this area of New Zealand is ideally suited to superior seed production.

The Crops

New Zealands temperate climate allows a wide range of vegetable, fodder, pasture and amenity seeds to be produced. The clean, green environment of New Zealand is ideal for seed production due to low humidity, plentiful sunshine and extensive irrigation.

Quality Control

Smith Seeds integrated management package allows only the best conditions for producing your crops. During the growing season, fields are inspected regularly with the grower, and appropriate management advice is given.

All crops are inspected prior to flowering for off types and if found, these are removed by our experienced field team.

Our clients are sent regular reports and digital photographs to ensure that they know as much as we do about the growing of their crops.

The Team

Father Ross and sons Grant and Mike Smith established Smith Seeds to give seed companies around the world the opportunity to produce their seeds in New Zealand with a company that specialises only in production.

We inspect the harvesting and transport machinery to ensure that they are free from any contaminants. We then coordinate with the cleaning warehouse to ensure the smooth arrival and cleaning of your seeds.

We have many types of machinery available to us. As well as screening, cylinders and gravity machinery, we also use spiral seperators and colour sorting machines to ensure a quality product. State of the art artificial drying machinery is also available, should it be required. Cleaning can be scheduled to suit your requirements.
