Western Australia - Encouraging the future leaders of agriculture

South Perth,
September 25, 2015

High-achieving school students who intend to pursue careers in the agricultural sector have been recognised and supported with the Department of Agriculture and Food’s AgLinkEd scholarships and awards.

Department of Agriculture and Food Regional Director Neil Guise presented the awards at Claremont Showground yesterday (24 September), at the Royal Agriculture Society’s Farm Skills competition presentation.

Farm Skills brings together students from throughout the State to compete in a series of team events aimed at providing students with skills that will assist them in their future careers in the agriculture sector.

“Two AgLinkEd Scholarships valued at $1500 each were open to Year 11 students attending any agricultural college in WA who intend to pursue a career in the agricultural sector,” Mr Guise said.

“The scholarships provide financial assistance for agricultural studies, to be used as part payment for Year 12 college costs.

“Scholarships were awarded to WA College of Agriculture students Patrick Swallow who studies at Denmark and Lauren Rayner who attends Narrogin; both of whom were raised on agricultural properties.”

Patrick intends completing a tertiary qualification in agribusiness with the aim of supporting the growth and development of the agricultural workforce through teaching and to become a fourth generation farmer in the family farm business.

“Patrick’s passion for the industry is clear and he will make an excellent young ambassador for the agricultural industry,” Mr Guise said.

Patrick also holds a Certificate I in Agrifood Operations and participates in agricultural shows by competing in junior judging and presenting and parading livestock.

Scholarship recipient Lauren hopes to undertake a tertiary qualification that equips her to advise agricultural businesses, potentially as a veterinarian or livestock reproduction specialist.

“With many years of experience assisting on her family’s mixed enterprise farm she particularly enjoys the practical aspects of her studies such as handling livestock,” Mr Guise said.

“In the longer term Lauren hopes to be an ambassador for women in agriculture.”

Mr Guise said Agriculture Encouragement Awards of $500 were open to high school students up to Year 11 attending any WA school with an agriculture program.

The prize money is paid to the schools for use on agricultural excursions, agricultural equipment or further studies for the winning students.

Year 9 Kiara College student Noah Brooks enjoys the practical nature of agriculture and is aiming for a career in agriculture or fisheries. He has experience in the management of chickens, sheep and cattle, the maintenance of agricultural machinery and fences, and horticultural production.

Kojonup District High School Year 10 student Ashley Evans has experience assisting in seeding and harvesting crops, and handling, marking and drenching sheep, and he is accredited in vaccinating livestock for sheep and goats for export. Ashley hopes to learn a trade to apply to a career in agriculture.

Year 11 Kelmscott Senior High School student Sara Beaman is a capable cattle handler who has participated in cattle activities including a Youth Cattle Handlers’ camp and preparing to exhibit at the IGA Perth Royal Show. Sara has also carried out practical farm activities including weed control, tree planting and cattle drafting.
