Plant Breeder

Location: Guadalupe, California, USA


 

Key Responsibility

Reporting to the Regional Breeding Director, the Plant Breeder will be responsible for the improvement of several ornamental crops, developing parent lines and hybrids, and stewarding varieties through the commercial pipeline to ‘Color the World’.

The breeder will work closely with other PanAmerican Seed product managers, breeders, technicians, and growers. As well as collaborating with production, technical breeding support teams and the product development team.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in plant breeding/genetics or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline with experience in breeding/genetics or M.S. degree with 6+ years of plant breeding/genetics experience.
  • Knowledge and passion for both molecular and traditional plant breeding and the ability to successfully merge cross-disciplinary approaches to create successful breeding pipeline.
  • Ability to keep self-informed on current or state-of-the-art plant breeding technologies.
  • Ability to think creatively, adapt to new situations, solve problems, and focus on details
  • Ability to work independently and in dynamic team settings.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills in English, strong interpersonal skills and able to work in a diverse, multi-cultural environment.
  • Experience with database management, Excel, statistical software, and analyses preferred.
  • Flexible and adaptable; able to be effective in a fast-paced environment.
  • Relocation with the ability to work on-site at Guadalupe, California.
  • Available for domestic travel and international travel without restrictions.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work in a greenhouse setting with various temperature conditions.
  • Must possess the ability to walk and maneuver through the greenhouse and in between benches and stand for long periods of time.
