The Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions regret to announce that the Prairie Cereals Summit (PCS) in Banff, Alberta in December has been cancelled due to current Alberta health and safety protocols, and the commissions' desire to contribute to reducing the spread of COVID-19 in the province. The commissions feel the safety of staff and attendees is paramount during this time of uncertainty. Although PCS is cancelled, Alberta Barley’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and director and delegate session will be held in an online format on December 9, 2020.
 
While no online format will be offered for the conference portion of PCS this year, event registrants will receive a full refund due to the cancellation. Registrants will receive an email regarding the refunds within the next 24 hours.
 
In the coming days, Alberta Barley will be releasing registration information for the online AGM, and director and delegate session which will be held on December 9. Alberta Barley encourages farmers to register to participate in the online AGM and delegate and director session that will feature speakers on current industry issues. 
 
“While we can no longer host the Alberta Barley AGM in-person in conjunction with PCS, we are optimistic about the online format which has worked well for our regional meetings,” says Dave Bishop, Alberta Barley chair. “I strongly encourage barley farmers to register for the online AGM and tune-in from the comfort of your home to hear about the work Alberta Barley is doing on your behalf.” 
  
The Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions would like to thank PCS sponsors for their continued support as the commissions look forward to hosting PCS in 2021. The decision to cancel PCS with no virtual option comes after consideration of the event’s claim to fame, which is a gathering place for wheat and barley farmers alike to celebrate our industry at the iconic Banff Springs Hotel. 
 
“PCS has grown to be known as a great event for networking with fellow farmers and industry,” says Todd Hames, Alberta Wheat Commission chair. “While it’s unfortunate that we cannot gather and learn from expert speakers, network, and celebrate a successful harvest, we look forward to a future PCS event when it is safe to gather.”
