The 11th International Congress of the IHSG - International Herbage Seed Group, organized by FNAMS (French Seed Growers’ association) in collaboration and with the support of its French seed industry partners, will be held in France on June 11-18, 2023. This scientific congress will allow international actors of the forage and turf seed industry to discuss production issues as well as to share solutions in order to promote this exceptional industry!

France is the world's leading exporter of agricultural seeds of all species and the leading European producer with 403,000 hectares. The French seed sector employs 17,000 people.
The production of forage and turf seeds is carried out by 4,165 seed growers, 12 breeding companies, 50 production companies and 3,174 distribution companies. This production generates a turnover of 307 M€. Every year, about 55 new varieties are created to meet the needs of the markets.

The French forage and turf seed industry has a long history of international cooperation and participates in various scientific and technical conferences, including the IHSG. The IHSG was created in 1978 to encourage cooperation and communication between international scientists involved in the production of forage grass seed (ryegrass, fescue, bromegrass, orchard grass, etc.) and turf seed, as well as in the production of forage legume seed (mainly clover and alfalfa).

The issues encountered in seed production are often common to the different producing countries.

Approximately 60 papers will be presented, addressing the following 4 topics.

  • What research is being conducted by producing countries to adapt seed production to climate change?
  • How to develop new alternatives to pesticides for organic or conventional production?
  • What practices can we share to optimize harvest and post-harvest?
  • How can we improve the competitiveness of production regarding cost inflation?

The event will gather 120 participants (scientists, breeders, research and technical institutes, seed multipliers), coming from 20 different countries in order to share their knowledge during conferences and technical visits.

The congress will take place in 2 parts:

  • From June 11-14 in Angers and its surroundings: conferences and technical visits
  • From June 15-18: Post Technical Tour in Centre-Val de Loire and Grand-Est regions (Aube and Marne).

Registration for the conference is open with preferential rates until March 15th, 2023.

The International Herbage Seed Group Congress is co-organized by the main actors of the French seed industry and placed under the High Patronage of the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty.

This congress is managed by

  • A scientific committee composed of: FNAMS, INRAE, GEVES, ARVALIS-Institut du Végétal, ESA ANGERS, BARENBRUG and CERIENCE
  • An organization committee composed of: FNAMS, UFS, SEMAE and CERIENCE
