Blockchain, artificial intelligence, gene editing and the future of sustainable food production

USA
September 10, 2018

No industry may be more on the cutting edge of new technology than agriculture and food production. At the Bayer Future of Farming Dialogue 2018, five leaders will explore transformative technologies in agriculture – such as digitalization, blockchain, gene editing and harnessing the microbiome – that will allow farmers to feed more people, more sustainably.

“There has never been a more important time for innovation in agriculture,” said Bob Reiter, Head of R&D of the Crop Science division of Bayer. “Our world faces enormous challenges including a changing climate, limited natural resources and a growing population. And we believe agriculture is part of the solution. With these talks, we’re looking at how breakthrough innovation benefits farmers, consumers and our planet.”

Questions featured speakers will address include:

What learnings can the agriculture industry take from innovative pioneers in other industries?

How can we ensure that new innovations benefit farmers large and small, as well as society?

How will societal acceptance of new technologies affect their adoption?

Experts presenters will include:

  • Phil Harris is the President and Co-Founder of Ripe, an organization of blockchain engineers, technologists, Internet of Things (IoT) and sensor experts, growers, and farm to fork specialists bringing a wide range of expertise to create a more prosperous food system for all.
  • Daniel Koppel is the Co-Founder & CEO of Prospera, an artificial intelligence and analytics start-up that helps farmers produce healthier, higher-quality crops.
  • Dr. Tom Adams is the CEO of Pairwise, an agricultural company focused on new ways of utilizing gene editing and leveraging natural diversity in agricultural crops to address global food challenges.
  • Brooke Bissinger, director of entomolgy at AgBiome, will explain how her company is harnessing the power of microorganisms and the microbiome to create cutting-edge solutions in the realm of crop protection.
  • Justin Gong is the co-founder of XAG, a top-rated technology company focused on agricultural automation and R&D of unmanned devices. Gong will share how the Sustainable Farming Programme, a partnership between Bayer, XAG and Rural Taobao, is reimagining the sustainable farm.

Simon Pampena, a presenter on the Discovery Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science, will moderate a Q&A session after the presentations.

About the Future of Farming Dialogue
The Future of Farming Dialogue is an annual thought leadership event and media summit convened by the Crop Science division of Bayer each year at its global headquarters in Monheim, Germany. Taking place this year from September 17-19, the Future of Farming Dialogue not only provides an opportunity for Crop Science leadership to share strategic news but also serves as a platform to facilitate meaningful conversation about the present challenges and the future of global agriculture between media and online influencers from around the world and some of the world’s leading innovators, change-makers and voices in agriculture. This year’s event will explore the intersection between innovation, sustainability and digital transformation and will highlight stakeholders in the industry coming together to shape agriculture for farmers, consumers and the planet. The event will broadcast live on the Crop Science Facebook page and Bayer encourages the public to engage on social media via #FutureFarming.
