Fiona Burnett will lead the discussions on fungicide resistance management
A leading expert in fungicide management will tour the UK and explore the strategic development of low resistance risk fungicide programmes.
Influential groups, well placed to discuss and promote best practice guidance to growers of cereals and their advisers, are encouraged to host a session.
Coping with the loss of chlorothalonil will be a major discussion point. Due to be withdrawn next spring, the active ingredient has been a long-term component of cereal fungicide programmes. With its multisite mode of action, it has provided control against key foliar cereal pathogens and protected other important chemistry from resistance.
Paul Gosling, who manages disease research at AHDB, said: “The loss of chlorothalonil will leave a gap in the resistance management aspect of many cereal spray programmes. New fungicides are coming to the market, we need to consider ways to protect them and the existing chemistry.”
Fiona Burnett, chair of the Fungicide Resistance Action Group UK (FRAG) and Professor of Applied Plant Pathology at SRUC, will lead the discussions.
Developed as part of the Fungicide Futures initiative, the discussions will cover:
- Fungicide resistance status of UK pathogens
- Managing resistance without chlorothalonil
- Resistance management with new chemistry
The session format will be either a:
- Short (30–60 minute) presentation
- Half-day workshop
- Focus group

A limited number of sessions will take place this winter (December–February).
Applicants should demonstrate that their events are:
- Suitable for strategic discussions (e.g. with core programme setters)
- Designed to have a broad impact

- Details of the event (e.g. target audience, date and location)
- The type of session preferred
The deadline for requests is 31 October 2019. As availability is limited, sessions will be awarded to events that have the greatest potential to influence the largest area of cereal production.
