European Commission authorises eight genetically modified products for food and feed uses

Brussels, Belgium
November 28, 2019

Today, the European Commission authorised eight Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), all for food/feed uses (maize MZHG0JG, maize MON 89034 x 1507 x NK603 x DAS-40278-9, maize MON 89034 x 1507 x MON 88017 x 59122 x DAS-40278-9, maize Bt11 x MIR162 x MIR604 x 1507 x 5307 x GA21, the renewals of soybean MON 89788 and of soybean A2704-12, the renewal of cotton LLCotton25, and the renewal of oilseed rape T45).

All of these Genetically Modified Organisms have gone through a comprehensive authorisation procedure, including a favourable scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The authorisation decisions do not cover cultivation. All Member States had the right to express their view in the Standing Committee and subsequently the Appeal Committee.

Given the outcome of the process the European Commission has the legal duty to proceed with the authorisation.

The authorisations are valid for 10 years, and any products produced from these Genetically Modified Organisms will be subject to the EU's strictlabelling and traceability rules.

For more information on GMOs in the EU see here.
