A new journey in flavour - Flavor Journey is the first long shelf life melon from Seminis Australia

Australia
July 8, 2020

Utilising unique breeding techniques and research facilities, Seminis is excited to add Flavor Journey, our first long shelf life (LSL) honeydew variety, to our melon portfolio. In Flavor Journey, Seminis has developed a melon variety that we believe will exceed the demands of growers and the expectations of consumers.

David Campbell, Market Development Lead for Seminis said understanding that local melon growers need a fruit that offers uniform size, LSL and high yields, was the foundation on which Seminis set out to develop a new, sweeter honeydew.

David says, “Flavor Journey, has been trialed for many years and is the result of collaboration and guidance from farmers across the country”.

Renowned for its near spherical shape, green flesh and smooth white skin, Flavor Journey boasts a myriad of unique benefits to growers such as a smaller and tighter seed cavity, high pack rate and early flavour and sugar development, which allows more flexibility in harvesting schedules and supply chain transportation.

Working closely with the melon breeding teams from Bayer, David explains the variety development process concentrated on producing an exceptional and reliable fruit for our customers. “We focussed on developing a honeydew variety that boasts a long shelf life, so growers would feel confident that their product will be enjoyed by consumers many days after harvesting”.

Flavor Journey was developed to possess high brix content making it a sweeter melon than other honeydews on the market. It was also bred to grow during the warmest production environments, possesses aphid resistance and has strong vine vigour, for added protection against sunburn.

David feels confident that Flavor Journey will impress both farmers and consumers for years to come. “We are proud to present a melon that we believe meets the needs and demands of melon growers. With its strong export potential, harvest flexibility and amazing taste, we know Flavor Journey will satisfy both growers and consumers alike”.
