BASF’s Sefina Inscalis insecticide approved for use in California crops -
Active ingredient provides effective control of whiteflies and aphids in cucurbits and cotton

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA
June 16, 2020

BASF’s Sefina® insecticide has received registration for use in California. Sefina insecticide delivers strong control against piercing and sucking insects while being gentle on beneficial insects and pollinators. It is labeled for use for a variety of crops including cotton, citrus, fruiting vegetables, and cucurbits.

“Whiteflies and aphids can cause costly damage to both the quality and yield of these crops,” says Chad Asmus, Product Manager, Specialty Crop Insecticides. “Sefina insecticide targets these damaging insects while being gentle on pollinators and beneficial insects, which will be especially relevant for cucurbits and cotton this season in California.”

Fueled by Inscalis® insecticide, the only active ingredient in the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) mode of action class 9D, the chemistry disrupts the sensory responses of target insects, quickly stopping feeding and limiting the spread of damage and/or the transmission of vectored pathogens.

The newly available benefits of Sefina insecticide for California’s cucurbit growers include:

  • No pollinator restrictions:  Sefina insecticide offers application freedom with a pollinator compatible mindset.
  • Complements parasitic and predatory control: Sefina insecticide preserves beneficial insects like ladybugs for Integrated Pest Management.
  • Unique mode of action class: Sefina insecticide has been classified by the IRAC as the only member in the new mode of action subgroup 9D. Sefina gives growers another tool to help manage the development of insecticide resistance.
  • Fast onset of action: Sefina insecticide quickly stops feeding damage and transmission of vectored pathogens.
  • Not a restricted use pesticide: One of only a handful of insecticides that does not carry a RUP label.
