United Kingdom - Growing lucerne: Allengrove Farm open day – 26 April 2022

United Kingdom
March 8, 2022

If you are looking at different ways to produce high-quality protein in light of rising imported feed costs and increasing sustainability demands, have you considered growing lucerne?

Dairy and livestock farmer Jack Bye has been growing lucerne for more than 15 years, enjoying the productivity gains and environmental benefits this largely overlooked crop provides. He is also currently running a trial supported by Germinal and St Catherine’s Seeds to compare different varieties and mixes, as well as undersowing it with clover and grass seed.

Lucerne is one of the most grown crops globally, but its unfamiliarity leaves many UK farmers reluctant to try it. Keen to help others learn more, Mr Bye and his son, Alistair, are sharing their extensive knowledge and experience at a Germinal-hosted Open Day on Tuesday 26 April 2022.

Why grow lucerne?

  • Highly digestible and protein-rich complementary feed
  • Outstanding yield and D-value
  • Able to fix nitrogen, reducing input costs and leaving nitrogen in the soil for following crops
  • Suited to all soil types of well-drained ground with good drought tolerance
