NPX UK's oilseed rape variety portfolio gives growers the maximum flexibility for success

United Kingdom
September 16, 2024

The Provisional results of the AHDB Winter oilseed rape Recommended list (RL) trials underline the success of the NPZ UK portfolio of varieties.

“Our all-hybrid suite of oilseed rape varieties gives growers a wide choice, from the high yielding mainstream varieties to our clubroot resistant and specialist high erucic acid varieties,” comments Chris Guest, NPZ UK managing director. “The AHDB gross output results for 21-24 shows our Candidate Maverick at the top. closely followed by UK-Recommended Turing and Vegas, plus E/W Recommended Murray.”

First and foremost on the list is Maverick. Its excellent yield potential is combined with exceptional RlmS and Rlm7 stem canker resistance, TuYv resistance, and outstanding autumn and spring vigour.

Vegas is very high yielding with exceptional RlmS Phoma resistance. It has very good Light leaf spot scores, mid-maturity and is very vigorous – particularly in the spring, it has also performed exceptionally well in 2024 official trials.

Turing has a strong performance in both East/West and North regions. Its excellent yield potential is combined with very good light leaf spot resistance, and outstanding autumn and spring vigour.

Murray has high gross output and high seed yield combined with exceptional RlmS Phoma resistance as well as good Light leaf spot scores and strong spring vigour. Added to this, with the new AHDB ratings for Verticillium wilt resistance, it features in the highest category of ‘moderately resistant’, showcasing its broad stem health characteristics.

Crome has a Specific Recommendation for growing on land infected with common strains of clubroot. It has a high gross output, good resistance to Light leaf spot with good stem stiffness and resistance to lodging.

Crusoe and Cromat are both Candidates for the Recommended List for growing on land infected with common strains of clubroot.

In addition to the market leader Crome, now Crusoe and Cromat offer increased yield, much improved disease resistance in the instance of phoma stem canker, and are both TuYV resistant.

Crusoe in particular looks set to be a game changer with its broad disease resistance package including light leaf spot resistance for both the northern and east/west markets.

Resort is a high erucic acid rape (HEAR) hybrid intended for specialist use in industrial processes and is a Described variety on the AHDB List. With the bonuses available for HEAR varieties – and Resort  is the only one on the AHDB list – it is a good option for growers wanting to be in this specialist market

“In summary, the eight NPZ UK varieties featured on the 2024 AHDB harvest results list give growers a sure foundation for success with their oilseed rape cropping in the coming season,” adds Mr Guest.
