Bayer CropScience has signed an agreement to acquire Biagro Group, headquartered in Gral Las Heras, Provincia de Buenos Aires/Argentina, a producer and distributor of biological seed treatment solutions. Established in 1984, Biagro has approximately 140 employees and production facilities in Argentina and Brazil. Its portfolio of established brands includes seed-applied inoculants, plant growth-promoting microorganisms and other products for integrated pest management based on bacterial and fungal strains. Financial details have not been disclosed.
"Our aim is to further expand our global SeedGrowth business by offering an attractive and high-quality on-seed portfolio based on products, coatings, equipment and services. Biagro’s product range is a valuable addition to our portfolio and will substantially improve soybean productivity," said Matthias Haug, Head of SeedGrowth at Bayer CropScience. "We will continue expanding our competencies in biological seed treatment to provide growers with easy-to-use solutions for application on-seed as well as in-furrow."
"This acquisition underlines the strategic role of Argentina in our growth ambitions", said Eduardo Estrada Whipple, Head of the Region Latin America for Bayer CropScience, added. "We see a strong global demand for soybean meal, which is primarily used in animal feed. We are excited that with the technologies from Biagro we will be able to meet the productivity demands of soybean farmers in Argentina and in the region."
The United States, Brazil and Argentina make up roughly 80 percent of global soybean production. High productivity and sustainable yield increases are the main objectives of soybean growers seeking to fulfill the global demand for protein. Bayer CropScience has around 100 years of experience in the seed treatment business and is investing significant resources to create flexible, robust and convenient soybean management offers and thus drive up yields and farm income.
Nitrogen essential for plant growth and soybean seed production
Soybeans need a lot of nitrogen and most of it is required from the initial flowering through to the seed-set stages. Inoculants containing high-quality Rhizobium bacteria strains enable plant roots to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, a very effective and cost-efficient method of supplying nitrogen to soybeans and other legume crops. Improved nutrient uptake leads to enhanced plant growth, more vigorous root structure and greener plant foliage, which result in higher yields and greater profit potential for soybean growers.
In Argentina, Biagro is a well-respected company in the production and marketing of highly effective inoculants and biological seed treatment. "Together with our new colleagues we can continue developing and marketing tailored solutions for the growing seed-treatment industry," said Martin Gruss, Head of SeedGrowth Products. "With innovative offerings including chemical crop protection products, biological plant-growth promoters and inoculants, soybean growers can get their seed treated well before planting," Hernán Bagliero, Head of the Region Conosur for Bayer CropScience, added.
This transaction will also help Bayer CropScience build up its successful soybean seed business in Latin America. The company is striving to become an important business partner for soybean growers.
The acquisition will be filed for clearance by the antitrust authority in Argentina.

Bayer CropScience hat einen Vertrag zur Übernahme der Biagro-Gruppe geschlossen, einem Hersteller und Vermarkter biologischer Saatgutbehandlungsmittel mit Sitz in Gral. Las Heras in der Provinz Buenos Aires (Argentinien). Das 1984 gegründete Unternehmen beschäftigt rund 140 Mitarbeiter und besitzt Produktionsstätten in Argentinien und Brasilien. Sein Portfolio an etablierten Marken umfasst u. a. biologische Saatgutbehandlungsmittel, Mikroorganismen zur Stärkung des Pflanzenwachstums sowie andere Produkte für die integrierte Schädlingsbekämpfung auf Basis von Bakterien- und Pilzstämmen. Finanzielle Details wurden nicht bekannt gegeben.

Eine hohe Produktivität und nachhaltige Ertragssteigerungen sind die vorrangigen Ziele der Sojabauern in ihrem Bestreben, der globalen Nachfrage nach Proteinen nachzukommen. Bayer CropScience verfügt über eine rund 100-jährige Erfahrung in der Saatgutbehandlung und setzt beträchtliche Ressourcen ein, um flexible, zuverlässige und praktische Lösungen für den Soja-Anbau zu entwickeln, die den Ertrag und damit auch das Einkommen der Landwirte erhöhen.
Stickstoff wichtig für Pflanzenwachstum und Produktion von Soja-Saatgut
Sojabohnen brauchen viel Stickstoff, von der anfänglichen Blüte bis hin zur Hülsenbildung. Kulturen, die qualitativ hochwertige Bakterienstämme enthalten, helfen den Wurzeln, Stickstoff aus der Atmosphäre zu binden - eine sehr effektive und kostengünstige Methode, Soja und andere Hülsenfrüchte auf natürliche Weise mit Stickstoff zu versorgen. Eine verbesserte Nährstoffaufnahme führt zu einem besseren Pflanzenwachstum, kräftigeren Wurzeln sowie grünerem Blattwerk und damit zu höheren Erträgen und einem größeren Gewinnpotenzial für die Sojabauern.
Biagro ist in Argentinien als Produzent und Vermarkter hoch effektiver Bakterienstämme und biologischer Saatgutbehandlungsmittel bekannt. "Gemeinsam mit unseren neuen Kollegen können wir die Entwicklung und Vermarktung maßgeschneiderter Lösungen für die wachstumsstarke Branche der Saatgutbehandlung weiter voranbringen", sagte Martin Gruß, Leiter SeedGrowth Products. "Mit innovativen Lösungen wie chemischen Pflanzenschutzmitteln, biologischen Pflanzenstärkungsmitteln und Mikroorganismen können Sojabauern ihr Saatgut vor der Aussaat erfolgreich behandeln", fügte Hernán Bagliero, Leiter der Region Conosur für Bayer CropScience, hinzu.
Die Akquisition unterstützt Bayer CropScience zudem dabei, sein erfolgreiches Geschäft mit Sojabohnensaatgut in Lateinamerika auszubauen. Das Unternehmen will zu einem wichtigen Geschäftspartner für Soja-Erzeuger werden.
Die Übernahme muss noch vom argentinischen Kartellamt genehmigt werden.

Fundado em 1984, o Grupo Biagro conta com aproximadamente 140 colaboradores e instalações de produção na Argentina e no Brasil. Seu portfólio de marcas estabelecidas inclui inoculantes de biofertilidade aplicados em sementes, microrganismos que promovem o crescimento de plantas, bem como outros produtos para o manejo integrado de pragas com base em cepas bacterianas e fúngicas. Os detalhes financeiros do contrato não foram divulgados.
"Nosso objetivo é expandir ainda mais nosso negócio global de SeedGrowth (tratamento de sementes) ao oferecer um portfólio atrativo e de alta qualidade para uso em sementes baseado em produtos, revestimentos, equipamentos e serviços. A gama de produtos do Grupo Biagro é um valioso acréscimo ao nosso portfólio e vai melhorar de forma substancial a produtividade da soja", disse Matthias Haug, responsável global de SeedGrowth da Bayer CropScience. Nitrogênio essencial para o crescimento das plantas e produção de sementes de soja
A soja precisa de muito nitrogênio e a maioria dos produtos é consumida a partir do florescimento inicial até os estágios de desenvolvimento das sementes. Inoculantes de alta qualidade contendo cepas de bactérias Rhizobium permitem que as raízes das plantas fixem nitrogênio da atmosfera, um método muito eficaz e de boa relação custo/ benefício, em termos de fornecimento de nitrogênio para a soja e outras culturas. Uma melhor absorção de nutrientes leva a um melhor desenvolvimento da planta, a uma estrutura radicular mais vigorosa e a uma folhagem mais verde, o que resulta em rendimentos mais elevados e maior potencial de lucro para os produtores de soja.

Esta operação também ajudará a Bayer CropScience a construir com êxito seu negócio de sementes de soja na América Latina. A empresa está se esforçando para se tornar um importante parceiro de negócios dos produtores de soja. A aquisição será submetida à aprovação da autoridade antitruste da Argentina.
