USA - Syngenta honors 2013 Resistance Fighters of the Year

Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
April 1, 2014

In honor of their contributions to herbicide resistance management, Syngenta proudly welcomes two more leaders into the ranks of the Resistance Fighter of the Year Leadership Program: Joel Spring of Pella, Iowa, and Jason Weirich, Ph.D., of Columbia, Mo

The Resistance Fighter of the Year Leadership Program, now in its fifth year, honors agricultural stewards for their proactive approach to resistance management. Syngenta created the program in appreciation of committed agricultural advisors and to foster information sharing by connecting leaders who are active in the fight against resistance.

Spring is an Agronomy Sales Representative for Two Rivers Cooperative who carefully observes and experiments on weed populations in his area to make the best possible recommendations to his growers.

Weirich is the Director of Agronomy for MFA Inc. and holds multiple meetings each year to educate both growers and colleagues about the importance of good resistance management practices. “Syngenta started the Resistance Fighter of the Year Leadership Program when I was in graduate school, and I remember thinking it was a really good idea,” Weirich said. “It’s really exciting to now be involved in it.&rdquo

Consultants, agronomists and county extension agents who have successfully implemented resistance management programs in their area are all eligible for the program. Many worthy people were nominated for the program in 2013, but the resistance management tactics demonstrated by Weirich and Spring distinguished them as the best candidates

“Syngenta has been at the forefront of efforts to help growers manage resistance,” said Les Glasgow, Ph.D., Syngenta herbicide technical product lead. “We applaud partners like Weirich and Spring who share our passion to help growers and protect current and future technology. We think it is important their efforts be recognized and that their proactive methods are shared throughout the industry.”
