New ‘Focus on Soybean’ webcast helps promote fungicide resistance education

St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
July 25, 2014

Now more than ever, growers are experiencing yield loss and crop quality due to fungicide resistance, forcing them to either use more fungicides or select disease-resistant varieties that aren’t necessarily the highest yielding for their growing conditions.

Fungicides are an important weapon against plant disease and, now more than ever, it’s important for agricultural practitioners to manage this resistance.

Through a United Soybean Board grant-funded research project led by Carl Bradley, Associate Professor of Plant Pathology and Extension Specialist at the University of Illinois, the Plant Management Network has published a new ‘Focus on Soybean’ webcast to help facilitate fungicide resistance education for growers and consultants.

This webcast, titled “Management of Frogeye Leaf Spot and Fungicide Resistance” by Heather Kelly, Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Tennessee, is the second in a series of three talks on fungicide resistance.

This talk was developed to help consultants, growers, and other practitioners better understand management strategies for frogeye leaf spot in light of the QoI fungicide resistance that has developed in the pathogen population.

In the webcast, Dr. Kelly discusses:

  • The current distribution of QoI fungicide resistant Cercospora sojina, the fungal agent of frogeye leaf spot disease in soybean
  • Management strategies for frogeye leaf spot and fungicide resistance in soybean
  • Results from trials conducted on QoI fungicide resistant isolates in the lab and field

Management of Frogeye Leaf Spot and Fungicide Resistance” is permanently open access and can be found in the ‘Grant Outreach Webcasts’ section of ‘Focus on Soybean’, PMN’s webcast resource, located at www.plantmanagementnetwork.org/fos.

‘Focus on Soybean’ is a publication of the Plant Management Network that is supported, in part, by the United Soybean Board. To get the most out of this and other Plant Management Network resources, please sign up for PMN’s free electronic newsletter, PMN Update.

The Plant Management Network (www.plantmanagementnetwork.org) is a nonprofit online publisher whose mission is to enhance the health, management, and production of agricultural and horticultural crops. It achieves this mission through applied, science-based resources, like Focus on Soybean.

PMN partners with the United Soybean Board, as well as more than 80 other organizations, which include universities, nonprofits, and agribusinesses.
