OREGON: Stripe rust was just found in several varieties of winter wheat in the southern Willamette Valley in Oregon, and we expect to find it soon in the northern valley.
Dr. Chris Mundt and fellow Oregon State University researchers recently warned of the potential for a bad rust year due to this early find and the warm winter weather. This is about three weeks earlier than typical stripe rust recordings in the valley and could lead to an extra generation of the disease, which spells bad news for growers.
It’s important to begin scouting wheat fields, especially susceptible varieties, to catch the disease early. Additions of early fungicides during herbicide timing should also be considered due to the potential for a heavy rust year. Stay tuned for additional stripe rust updates from the PNW here on Know More, Grow More.
