United Kingdom - Amended approval for use of Wing-P from BASF on maize crops grown under plastic

United Kingdom
March 24, 2015

Source

  • EAMU for use under plastic
  • NEW earliest application time
  • Now approved for use on maize crops drilled on or after 1st April

Maize yield and quality is significantly affected by weed competition particularly during crop establishment. The earlier the weeds are controlled the less chance they have to compete with the crop for water, nutrients and light. Pre-emergence herbicides should form a key part of the herbicide strategy because they offer the best opportunity to control weeds and allow the crop to establish as quickly as possible.

Advantages of pre-emergence herbicides

  • Starts the weed control as early as possible in the crop
  • Allows the crop to get off to the best and cleanest start possible
  • Reduces timing pressure on the post-emergence sprays
  • Avoids possible herbicide growth check to emerged crop from post-emergence sprays
  • Weather delays are less critical compared to post-emergence applications

Wing-P

Wing-P provides an ideal solution for pre-emergence herbicide applications in maize crops grown either with or without a plastic mulch cover. Furthermore, the EAMU approval for Wing-P has recently been amended so that Wing-P can now be applied to crops of either forage or grain maize grown under temporary plastic mulch that are drilled on or after 1st April.

Why use Wing-P?

  • Delivers 2 complementary active ingredients: pendimethalin and dimethenamid-p
  • Controls wide range of key weeds such as annual meadow-grass, black nightshade, cleavers, fat hen, common orache, groundsel, knotgrass, redshank and crane’s-bill
  • Dimethenamid-P is less affected by dry conditions compared to other pre-emergence herbicides
  • Flexible application timings in case the pre-emergence timing is missed it can be applied post-emergence up to 4 leaves of the crop
  • Excellent residual activity to control late germinating weeds

Benefit of Wing-P used under plastic

UCD trials 2014, 4 sites, scored on 0-5 scale with an increasing score being an increasing presence of weeds.

How to use?

  • Create a fine, firm and consolidated seedbed for best seed/soil contact and optimum activity from the pre-emergence herbicide
  • Ensure seed is covered with 5cm settled soil
  • Apply Wing-P as soon as possible after drilling - soil moisture is required for Wing-P to be activated
  • Best results occur if rain falls within 7 days of application
