USA - Syngenta introduces new high-yielding spring wheat variety for Northern Plains

Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA
Novmeber 3, 2015

  • SY Valda variety now available as certified seed to growers
  • New hard red spring wheat variety has top-end yield potential and high test weight

As 2016 spring wheat variety selection approaches in the Northern Plains, Syngenta reminds growers to implement proactive management plans and select varieties with consistent performance and superior genetics. Adding to a proven portfolio of AgriPro® brand wheat varieties, Syngenta introduces SY Valda hard red spring wheat variety. This new semi-dwarf variety offers a strong disease package including tolerance to stem and leaf rust, tan spot and Fusarium head blight. SY Valda is broadly adapted and suited for the Northern Plains.

“The basis of the AgriPro breeding program has been providing growers with high protein varieties like SY Ingmar and SY Soren, and now we have a new high yield variety like SY Valda, which is very exciting to complement the program,” said Corey Dathe, Northern Plains cereals key account lead, Syngenta. “SY Valda has a nice mix of top-end yield potential and excellent agronomics, plus standability. This has extended green leaf duration, allowing for maximum yield, making it one of the highest yielding varieties we have seen to date. The yield results we saw this past season were phenomenal.”

Other AgriPro brand hard red spring wheat varieties for the Northern Plains that will be offered for 2016 include SY Ingmar, SY Rowyn, SY Soren, SY Tyra, SY605 CL, Kelby, Jenna, and Brennan.

As growers begin preparing for the upcoming planting season, Syngenta recommends implementing an integrated approach to crop management. Planting quality certified seed varieties and incorporating good planting practices, such as residue management, proper seeding rates and seed treatments, are critical to helping wheat start strong.

When using seed treatments like CruiserMaxx® Vibrance® Cereals insecticide/fungicide, protection begins the moment seeds are planted. As the season progresses, scouting and applying foliar fungicides become important. Growers who choose an integrated management approach will greatly benefit at harvest time, having maximized both their wheat yield and profit potential.
