Soil pH is often referred to as the “master variable” because it ultimately determines the soil's ability to supply nutrients to growing plants. Therefore, soil pH management and the process of liming are some of the most important soil-related activities a grower performs.
The Plant Management Network (PMN) has released a new presentation to help consultants, growers, and other practitioners properly evaluate liming materials available on the market. The webcast, entitled “Alternative Liming Materials,” was developed by Josh McGrath, Soil Management Extension Specialist at the University of Kentucky.
In the presentation, McGrath provides tips to determine if a liming product is legitimate and discusses several factors relevant to soil pH management, including:
- Primary causes of soil acidity
- Importance of determining the lime requirement, not just measuring soil pH
- Chemistry of how liming products increases soil pH
- Evaluation of a liming product's effectiveness
The executive summary and full 19-minute presentation will remain open access through December 31 in the Focus on Soybean webcast resource.
