Ohlde Seed Farms offers prescription planting online

Palmers, Kansas, USA
February 2014

Building on their philosophy that “no two fields are alike,” Ohlde Seed Farms invested into an online technology offering to provide an even more advanced seed selection service. The Ohlde Soil Specific Seed (OSSS) online service helps producers develop a prescription-planting program specifically tailored to their farms and fields using a vast array of farmer- and company-generated data.

“The OSSS program combines on-farm data about soil attributes, crop rotation, equipment type, irrigation, etc., with the unique performance attributes of seed, chemical and fertilizer products to ensure optimal performance in each individual field,” says Shane Ohlde, CEO of Ohlde Seed Farms. “Working with their Ohlde Seed representatives, producers can enter all pertinent data into the program; state their preferences for such things as insect control, preferred agronomic attributes like drought tolerance, standability and drydown, along with their refuge management strategy, and be assured of the best hybrid recommendations for their fields.”

According to Ohlde, OSSS is built upon data-driven farming that combines proprietary product knowledge with the data farmers own and manage to improve crop production. The program takes into account, for example, crop rotation, soil productivity, and irrigation. It also makes allowances for all trait platforms and trait needs to maximize the trait performance each producer needs.

Farmers already have the knowledge to classify geography, soil types, nutrient levels and normal planting and harvest timing for their farms,” Ohlde says. “In the meantime, we have a vast amount of data on the hybrids that we sell and the types of soil on which they excel. The precision agriculture powered by OSSS simply lets our field representatives put the data together so that our customers get the highest potential from each field when using our products.

Ohlde continues, “In addition to those great tools, the OSSS adds in the feature of allowing customers to track all records for that specific farm and growing crop, from planting date and rate, to starter and fertilizer application records, and spraying records all in one simple location.”

As an added feature, Ohlde says the valuable data generated with the OSSS program can also be safely shared with and analyzed by other trusted advisors and providers, such as soil consultants and fertilizer dealers, for an even more concise data-driven farming system. In my opinion, this allows everyone involved to work together to bring the most value back to our customers.”
