USA - Blackhawk Naturalyte insect control from Dow AgroSciences receives special use label recommendation to control midge in grain sorghum

Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
July 28, 2015

Blackhawk® Naturalyte® insect control has received a special FIFRA section 2(ee) label recommendation for use in grain sorghum, Dow AgroSciences announced today. The section 2(ee) recommendation allows growers to use Blackhawk for effective control of sorghum midge and many lepidopteran pests, including corn earworm (headworm), armyworm and webworm at the rate of 1.5 to 3.3 ounces per acre.

“In response to growers’ requests for a different treatment option to control midge and many lepidopteran pests, Blackhawk offers them a new and unique mode of action,” says Kevin Sheaffer, insecticides product manager for Dow AgroSciences. “Blackhawk is an effective alternative to pyrethroids and will not flare secondary pests, such as sugarcane aphids.”

When applied at a rate as low as 1.5 ounces per acre, the easy-to-use dry formulation provides effective broad-spectrum control of sorghum midge and several lepidopteran pests with minimal impact on beneficial insects. Blackhawk mixes well with other products when mixed correctly according to directions and federal label, and it can be applied during all stages of sorghum growth.

The flexible application window allows sorghum growers to apply Blackhawk® Naturalyte® from early season through grain production — up to 21 days pre-harvest — for effective control of midge and other yield-robbing pests. This is especially useful for treating fall armyworm, which often infests grain sorghum well in advance of head emergence.

“Because of the wet spring and sporadic planting, growers are likely to experience erratic sorghum head emergence,” Sheaffer says. “As a result, the crop may require additional treatment to make sure later-emerging heads also get treated for sorghum midge."

Growers should refer to individual state FIFRA section 2(ee) labels for complete application guidelines and limitations. Always apply in accordance with full federal label use precautions, mixing and application directions. Please contact your local Dow AgroSciences representative with additional questions.
