The Potato Breeding Manual was presented during the Potato Europe Exhibition in Emmeloord, the Netherlands, on 11 September. The book was handed over to Kees van Arendonk, chair of the Dutch Potato Organisation (NAO) an is available in English and Dutch.
In this manual the secrets of successful potato breeding are revealed. This book aims not only at potato breeders. It is a source of inspiration for everyone working in the potato chain.
Practice and science combined
In this first practical manual theory, scientific knowledge and especially the practice of potato breeding work are combined. Topics included are the history of potato breeding in the Netherlands, background information on genetics and heritability of traits in potato. Moreover, practical chapters on making crossings with or without wild potato relatives, and the selection of new clones are included. A special feature is the information on the systematic assessment of various traits, abundantly illustrated with colour pictures. Useful is also everything the farmer breeder needs to know about the inspection and the process of registrating new varieties.
BioImpuls
As part of the potato breeding project BioImpuls a course for farmer breeders was initiated (2008-2013). The initial aim was to stimulate an organic potato growers and breeders network. To support this course a course manual was developed for organic farmer breeders. However, the interest from the conventional sector increased at the same time, which led to the idea to develop a general breeding manual. To breed for varieties adapted to organic agriculture a separate chapter deals about the priorities of traits important for organic production systems. Such a manual does not yet exist for the international potato sector, and that is why not only a Dutch version but also an English one has been produced.
Aardappelkweekboek onthult geheimen succesvolle aardappelveredeling
Op 11 september, tijdens de vakbeurs PotatoEurope in Emmeloord, is het Aardappelkweekboek feestelijk gelanceerd. Het praktijkhandboek komt voort uit het project BioImpuls Aardappelveredeling. Het eerste exemplaar is overhandigd aan aan Kees van Arendonk, voorzitter van de Nederlandse Aardappelorganisatie. Het boek is in het Nederlands en het Engels uitgegeven.
In het 'Aardappelkweekboek - praktijkhandboek voor de aardappelketen' zijn de geheimen van succesvolle aardappelveredeling te vinden. Het boek is niet alleen bedoeld voor aardappelkwekers en aspirant-aardappelkwekers, maar ook interessant voor consumenten die meer willen weten over de herkomst van rassen. Een dergelijk handboek bestaat nog niet voor de internationale aardappelsector, en daarom is het ook in het Engels uitgebracht.
Praktijk en wetenschap gebundeld
In het Aardappelkweekboek komen theorie, wetenschappelijke kennis en vooral de praktijk van het aardappelkweekwerk samen. Het boek behandelt ondermeer de geschiedenis van de aardappelkweek in Nederland, en biedt achtergrondkennis over genetica en de overerving van eigenschappen bij aardappel. Daarnaast zijn er praktische hoofdstukken over het kruisen met al of niet wilde soorten en over de selectie van nieuwe klonen. Bijzonder is de systematische beoordeling van verschillende eigenschappen, rijk geïllustreerd met foto’s. Maar ook nuttig is alles over wat een kweker moet doen voor de keuring, en het proces van aanmelding en registratie van nieuwe rassen.
BioImpuls
Het boek is tot stand gekomen binnen het overkoepelende programma BioImpuls, dat zich richt op de verbetering van de biologische aardappel. Uit de cursus ‘Aardappelveredeling voor Kwekers’, waarvoor een grote belangstelling was, kwam de wens om biologische aardappelkwekers met een praktische handleiding te ondersteunen: het Aardappelkweekboek. Voor de veredeling van biologische aardappelrassen is er een apart hoofdstuk opgenomen over de prioriteiten van eigenschappen die de biologische teelt aan een aardappelras stelt.
