Euroseeds calls on Danish presidency to continue to drive NGT discussions towards conclusion

Appreciation for continuous progress during Polish presidency term

Based on its strong expertise and position as a leading plant breeding and seed production country, Euroseeds is convinced that the incoming Danish presidency will make the successful conclusion of negotiations on a new Regulation on New Genomic Techniques one of its top priorities. Plant breeding innovation is a crucial enabler for the aspired boost of competitiveness of Europe’s farmers and wider agri-food chain sectors as well as for driving the transition towards a sustainable food system. Here, NGTs such as gene editing are indispensable tools for Europe’s breeders to continue to bring improved plant varieties to the market that meet the high quality requirements of their customers and for the EU to defend its position as a world leader in plant breeding reseach, product development and global seed exports.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU for its commitment and hard work on this file over the past months. Few have imagined that we would get as far as we are today”, Garlich von Essen, Secretary General & CEO of Euroseeds commented on eve of the Polish presidency.

Although a final political trilogue meeting originally foreseen to conclude discussions in the end had to be cancelled, this should not be seen as a principal setback for the negotiations.

“It is well-known that there are still some important points where agreement has not yet been reached. But we feel that there is a general appreciation of the key importance of this file not only for the seed sector, but laying the foundation for future innovation, competitiveness and quality of our EU agriculture. And there is a strong commitment to find the necessary compromises and solutions to address remaining issues and concerns.”, von Essen added, stressing the expectation of a continuation of negotiations under the Danish presidency as soon as possible.
