In the United States, the "law of
the land" has changed!
On October 21st, 2002, the
USDA National Organic Program (NOP) officially
became federal law. Prior to that, some areas in the US had
state organic laws while others did not. In other words, it
was a "buyer beware" market in many areas of the US. The
consumer had no assurance that "organic" meant the same thing
from one state to another.
In those states that had state laws regarding organics
prior to October 21st, 2002, the NOP now supercedes those laws.
In those states that had no laws in place prior to
October 21st, 2002, the new NOP regulations must be followed. For
growers who find themselves in this situation, adherence to
NOP standards will be quite a challenge.
For readers that have no intention of producing organic
seed, the subject is new, fresh and interesting. Give it a few
minutes of your time and perhaps you’ll see an attractive
market niche for you and/or your company. Keep in mind that
organic crop producers are now required by law to source
organic seed. I’ll do my best to keep the discussion short and
simple. |
