Interview with Dr. Isaac Nir

Now let's talk about seed production. How did you adapt your seed production system? What official rules are you following?

We have two main production seasons in Israel, the autumn season that starts in October and a spring season that starts in March. In special cases we can add an ‘off-season production’ in another specific microclimate like the Dead Sea or the Golan Heights.

Production starts with the compilation of a detailed program summarizing our orders, current availability and future production needs. Based on our production program, we then discuss actual production with our growers. Major crops are divided into 2-3 lots each to ensure sufficient production results. We have 150-200 varieties in production every year that were previously tested at the experimental station or in commercial production. Most of our growers have produced seed for Genesis Seeds for the last 4-5 years and each one of them is specialized in certain crops. To fulfill our orders for certified organic seeds, we have to coordinate with:

  • the official organizations that certify and supervise both our organic seeds growers and our company;
  • the organic growers that are certified by the official organizations;
  • the Genesis Seeds organic research that supports both our existing and our future production.
