UK representation on the management committee of the influential International Herbage Seed Group (IHSG) has been assured with the election of British Seed Houses’ herbage seed production manager John Fairey.
Mr Fairey’s appointment was confirmed at the recent IHSG conference in New Zealand, where 84 delegates representing 14 of the leading countries in grass and legume seed production met to exchange knowledge and agree future research and policy priorities.
“Influence in the decisions made within this group is important for UK seed production and our wider farming industry,” says John Fairey. “The tendency is for the agenda to be set largely by the major global players, such as New Zealand, Denmark and the USA, and whilst the direction is not necessary contrary to the needs of UK growers, it is important that we are represented at management committee level.
“The IHSG brings together the world’s leading university researchers, trials organisations, commercial seed breeders and herbage seed growers, all with the common goals of sharing knowledge and results for the greater good. My role will involve the co-ordination of UK interests, including those of IBERS Aberystwyth University, NIAB-TAG, British Seed Houses and other herbage seed companies.”
