Interview with Roland Peerenboom - Enza Zaden

Please give us key numbers on the growth in the production of organic food in Europe and in the anticipated demand. When do you believe that organic seed production will be able to meet the demand?

Very difficult question. In some countries it is below 1%, in others 3-5%.

Politicians still aim at 10% in 2010, but I belief that on average it will be for the vegetable seeds 5% by 2010.

Much is still dependent on what will happen in the first few years after 2003.

In many cases the seed industry is now already able to meet demand in certain species.

There might always be accidental shortages in certain varieties, but that also happens in the conventional seeds business.
