You must be monitoring the
implementation of the US program. How do you assess its
success at this early stage? What are the problems and
challenges that have already surfaced?
It is still
too early to tell. I am afraid that with the present
regulations really not much has changed compared to the
regulations in effect before October 2002. It might only have
become a bit more difficult to obtain exceptions for the use
of organically produced seeds.
One
of the challenges is to match demand and supply for organic
seeds in the appropriate varieties in a timely manner.
Seed companies have to organize
production 1 or 2 years ahead of actual sales, and to determine
what and how much the organic growers will require a few years
down the road is really a very difficult task.
This is not a business in which anyone has
yet a
long experience. |
