Prof. Dr. Norbert Leist - International Seed Testing Association

October 2002

What role does ISTA play in the global seed industry?

The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) is the only worldwide organisation dedicated to seed testing. At the moment ISTA has members in more than 70 countries all over the world. Its primary purpose is to develop, adopt and publish standard procedures for sampling and testing seeds and to promote uniform application of these procedures for evaluation of seeds moving in international trade.

Consequently ISTA provides the global seed industry with standardised techniques for seed quality control. Seed testing laboratories that meet the requirements of ISTA can apply for accreditation. Accredited laboratories are allowed to issue ISTA's International Seed Analysis Certificates for each lot tested. These certificates can be seen as a passport for international trade. So, ISTA facilitates the global seed industry with standardised techniques and harmonisation of the application of these techniques.
