What is ISTA’s
main focus, now and in the future? |
 |
The primary focus
for ISTA continues to be uniformity in seed testing, which is
accomplished, in part, through publication of the
International Rules for Seed Testing. The key to uniformity is
a combination of valid testing methods, properly equipped and
operated laboratories and competent laboratory personnel.
At this time we are focused on several areas which will
significantly contribute to strengthening these elements.
Under the laboratory accreditation program, we have completed
re-accreditation audits of all laboratories and have enhanced
the proficiency test program. In addition, the Executive
Committee has recently approved revisions to the ISTA
Laboratory Accreditation Standard, which now very close
parallels the ISO 17025 standard. A comprehensive method
validation system has been put in place for seed health
testing methods, and a working group has been appointed to
adapt this system for use for the other methods published as
ISTA Rules.
To ensure consistency in application of the Rules, the
Technical Committees are stepping up scheduling of regional
training workshops around the world. ISTA continues to respond
to the needs of the seed industry to facilitate international
trade. For example, a Task Force on GMO testing is working to
establish protocols, with a first draft of a new chapter for
the Rules now being reviewed. In recognition of the very rapid
changes in genetic testing technology, this chapter will not
include prescriptive testing methods, but instead will provide
the protocols which laboratories can use to demonstrate their
ability to produce the correct test results. |
