Naktuinbouw introduces new SE-PCR tests for tomato, pepper and cucurbitacea

The Netherlands
8 april 2026

We are introducing a new real-time RT-PCR to test the presence or absence of tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) on seed of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Pepper (Capsicum annuum) and Cucurbits (Cucurbitaceae). For this test is chosen to use the fast, reliable and sensitive seed-extract PCR method as test method.

The (real-time) PCR is a technique for rapid amplification of DNA

This is done with the help of pathogen-specific building blocks. The increase in DNA can be monitored digitally at any time. This makes it possible to faster and with more certainty confirm whether the seed samples actually contain the pathogen.

Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV)

Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) is a begomovirus and therefore automatically classified as a quarantine pathogen. As the name suggests, this virus originates from India but is also widespread in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The DNA virus is also commonly detected east of India in countries such as China, Thailand and Indonesia.

The virus is primarily transmitted by whiteflies, and its main host plants—besides Solanum spp., Capsicum spp. and cucurbits—include ladyfingers, carrots, soybeans, and ornamental species such as dahlias and tagetes.

The test

ToLCNDV on seed of Tomato, Pepper and/or Cucurbitaceae:

  • Test code: TOLCNDVQ030
  • Sample size:  3,000 untreated seeds
  • Test fee:  € 285,50
  • Duration test:  4 days

For basic fees see our price list.

Health, Testing & Analysis support sector

To support the sector, Health Testing & Analysis continues to develop new tests that can support diagnoses on plants and seeds with symptoms or just checking for and guaranteeing absence from certain plant pathogens.
