Changes in the Russian approval system for GM food

On the 1st January 2010 governmental decree came into force “On the list of paid services within the framework of state services provided by federal organs of executive power” (#984 from 2 December 2009).

As it follows from the explanation of the Chief sanitary physician safety assessment of GM food and raw food produced from GM sources will be performed by:

  • “Federal Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology”,
  • “G.N.Gabrichevsky Moscow Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology”,
  • “State Scientific Center of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology” (Obolensk, Moscow Region).

Previously safety assessment and conclusion preparation with regard to food derived from GM sources was prerogative of the Institute of Nutrition, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
